Wasted Pages Get Personal (Writing Workshop)

July 9, 2018 @ 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Last year in the New Yorker, Jia Tolentino declared the personal essay dead—or, rather, she declared the Internet’s personal essay boom—the age of sensationalist, bare-all click-bait, written primarily by women, queer, and POC writers for the eyes of the world—to be over.

But, for writers interested in the personal and confessional—especially those who represent marginalized perspectives—where does that leave us? What techniques can we use to effectively tell our stories? A certain kind of for-the-Internet personal essay has been laid to rest and its death has opened the door for a more expansive view of creative nonfiction.

In this open-format workshop we will share our own autobiographical writing and provide feedback, commentary, and critique of each other’s work, contextualizing our efforts through discussions of published essays. Assigned readings, both published and workshopped are required.

This six week session begins Monday June 11 at 6:30pm with dates Monday June 18, 25, and July 2, 9, 16th. Facilitated by Wasted Pages workshop alums, writers Annabel Lang and Alison Thumel.

All skill levels and backgrounds are welcome, and the workshop is geared toward both aspiring and experienced writers. The workshop is a community that supports expression, experimentation, and the free exchange of ideas. We aim to provide a resource for writers interested in publishing their work, or in making their work publishable, and to create lasting friendships among writers in Chicago.

Workshop fee is $30. Payment is for all sessions. Registration closes on June 8. Seating is limited. Secure your spot by emailing chicagoprc@gmail.com. Payment via PayPal. No refunds 24 before the first day of class.
